Gioto Sports Days is a weekly sports and activities club for young children of the local community of Gioto. Affectionately nick-named ‘The Dumpsite’, it is a community literally situated on a landfill whose children more often than not sift through rubbish to find food to sell instead of going to school; it is one of Kenya’s most neglected yet exploited communities. The hope of Gioto Sports Days is to promote a healthy lifestyle in The Dumpsite’s children and teach essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, lateral thinking and honesty (a much needed skill in this community!) The project also hopes to recognize and nurture any potential sports stars or leaders from the Dumpsite. Who knows? the next David Rudisha could be sifting through that rubbish, just waiting to be discovered.
